How often and why should I replace my motor oil?
Motor oil is packed with important protective additives
that combat heat, corrosion, and friction and have a durability of about 5,000kms.
Motor oil becomes contaminated during use by unburned fuel, water vapor, dust,
and even metal shavings. Debris and contaminants, also referred to as sludge, reduces engine performance and restricts oil flow throughout the critical oil
channels. Your engine is comprised of many very fast moving parts that rub
against each other. Inadequate lubrication, combined with excessive contaminates
creates premature ware. Frequent oil changes are the best way to maintain adequate
levels of protection for today's high-performing engines, especially those
driven under "stop and go" conditions like errand-running and city
traffic.
Do I drive under normal conditions or would they
be considered severe?
Normal driving conditions are classified as; allowing proper
warm up, no hills or extreme temperatures,
no stop and go traffic etc. With Ontario' s landscapes, climate and urban life we surly are far from normal. Studies show we operate our vehicles under these severe conditions up to 90% of the time. In January/ February 1999 issue of VIA, the California State Automobile Association defined severe service as "what most people think of as normal driving." No matter how normal they seem, these conditions are tough on your any engine oil. Severe service driving conditions usually include:
Why is lubrication so important?
Your engine is a mechanical power house with hundreds
of moving parts moving fast in precise proximity to each other. The main areas
where high performance lubrication is required is to reduce friction where
metals are within thousandths of an inch from each other. With rapid combustion
of fuel and the surrounding air happen thousands of times a minute, there is
intense stress on these metals. If you were to attempt to run an engine with
no oil, the metals would heat up and expand. This expansion will fill the critical
micro spaces and seize the motor with in minutes.
Will coming to Pennzoil and not using dealer products affect my warranty?
No, Pennzoil uses quality products that meet or exceed all vehicle manufacturer’s criteria. As long as you can present an invoice that your recommend service were done you will meet warranty requirements. Pennzoil as well keeps a record of all your services that can be supplied at any time to authenticate your compliance.
Why might my check engine light be on?
Many vehicles these days are littered with sensors supplying a central computer. If one of the circuits is interrupted the computer will inform you with the check engine light. If this light is on upon your visit we will give you our best opinion as to what the cause might be. However we are not equipped hook into your computer.
What does my oil light mean?
This is another sensor being tripped indicating a problem with your oil pressure. If this light comes on it is highly recommended to turn off the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. It could mean your oil level is to high or to low. Check your check your oil level and if it is not on its fill line it must be addressed. In most cases the oil is low and needs a top up.. An experienced professional should evaluate. If this light appears after a service at our facility contact the location immediately.
My owners manual says I should use 5W 30 engine oil. Can I use any other oil?
It is common that manufactures today recommend lighter grade oils. With newer technology motors are build to
tighter tolerances and a lighter oil is required to penetrate these areas. This is beneficial especially for cold starts when the oil is thicker. Lighter oil as well helps fuel economy.
What else does Pennzoil do other than change my oil?
In addition to our 21 point inspection, we give you peace of mind with informing you of any noticed problem areas. We perform many other services, that help keep your vehicle safe and up to date with your warrantee requirements.
